How to Register or Transfer a Domain to Momo Cloud
Whether you are starting fresh with a brand-new domain or moving an existing one from another registrar, Momo Cloud makes the process straightforward from your client area. This guide walks you through registering a new domain, transferring an existing one, and connecting it to your hosting with Momo Cloud's nameservers.
Understanding Your Options
Before you begin, it helps to know the difference between the three common domain scenarios:
| Scenario | What It Means | When to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Register a new domain | You purchase a domain that no one currently owns | Starting a new website or brand |
| Transfer a domain | Move an existing domain from another registrar to Momo Cloud | Consolidating domains or switching providers |
| Point nameservers only | Keep your domain at its current registrar but direct traffic to Momo Cloud hosting | You want to stay registered elsewhere but host here |
Registering a New Domain
Step 1 — Check Domain Availability
- Log in to your Momo Cloud client area.
- Click Domains in the top navigation, then select Register a New Domain.
- Type your desired domain name in the search box and click Check Availability.
- Review the results. You will see available extensions such as
.co.tz,.tz,.com,.net,.org, and others that Momo Cloud supports.
Tip: If you are targeting a Tanzanian audience, a .co.tz or .tz domain signals local presence and is often preferred by Tanzanian customers and search engines for local results.
Step 2 — Add to Cart and Provide Registration Details
- Click Add to Cart next to the domain you want.
- Choose the registration period (typically 1 year, with multi-year options available).
- Proceed to checkout. You will be asked to provide registrant contact information, including:
- Full legal name or company name
- Physical address (required for
.co.tzand.tzregistrations) - Email address
- Phone number
- Review your order and complete payment using any supported method — M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, Visa, or Mastercard. All prices are in TZS.
Tip: For .co.tz and .tz domains, accurate contact details are especially important as the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) may require verification. Use a valid email address you actively monitor.
Step 3 — Domain Activation
After payment is confirmed, your domain is registered and added to your account. New domains are typically active within a few minutes. You will receive a confirmation email. Your domain will automatically be pointed to Momo Cloud's nameservers if you also purchased hosting at the same time.
Transferring an Existing Domain to Momo Cloud
Transferring a domain moves its registration to Momo Cloud so you can manage everything in one place. Most transfers also add one year to the domain's existing expiry date.
Step 1 — Prepare Your Domain at the Current Registrar
Before starting the transfer, you must complete these steps at your current registrar:
- Unlock the domain. Log in to your current registrar's control panel and disable the domain lock (sometimes called "Registrar Lock" or "Transfer Lock"). This lock prevents unauthorised transfers but must be removed before you can move the domain.
- Disable WHOIS privacy (if enabled). WHOIS privacy hides your contact details publicly but can block transfer approval emails. Temporarily disable it so that ICANN and registrar confirmation emails reach you.
- Obtain the EPP/Auth code. This is also called the "transfer authorisation code" or "auth code." Your current registrar can provide it from their control panel or by email request. It is a string of letters and numbers unique to your domain.
Tip: Keep the EPP code handy — you will need to enter it during the Momo Cloud transfer request. EPP codes are usually valid for a limited time, so start your transfer promptly after receiving it.
Step 2 — Start the Transfer in the Momo Cloud Client Area
- Log in to your Momo Cloud client area.
- Go to Domains and select Transfer a Domain to Us.
- Enter the full domain name (e.g.,
yourbusiness.co.tzoryourbusiness.com) and click Check. - Enter the EPP/Auth code you obtained from your current registrar.
- Add the transfer to your cart, choose the transfer period if prompted, and complete payment in TZS.
Step 3 — Approve the Transfer Email
- After submitting the transfer request, ICANN will send a transfer approval email to the registrant email address on file for the domain.
- Open that email and click the approval link. Failing to approve can cause the transfer to expire.
- Your current registrar may also send a separate notification — some registrars auto-approve after a few days if you do not act, while others require explicit approval from their end too.
Step 4 — Wait for the Transfer to Complete
Domain transfers typically take 5 to 7 days to complete, as required by ICANN policies. You can monitor the transfer status in your Momo Cloud client area under Domains > My Transfers. Once complete, the domain will appear in your account and your registration period will be extended by one year.
Tip: Do not let your domain expire while a transfer is in progress. Renew it at the current registrar first if it is close to expiry, then initiate the transfer.
Pointing Your Domain to Momo Cloud Hosting
If you registered or transferred your domain to Momo Cloud, or if you are keeping your domain at another registrar but want to host with Momo Cloud, you need to point the domain to Momo Cloud's nameservers.
- Log in to wherever your domain is currently registered (Momo Cloud client area, or your other registrar's panel).
- Find the Nameservers or DNS settings for the domain.
- Replace any existing nameservers with Momo Cloud's nameservers:
ns1.momo.tzns2.momo.tz
- Save the changes.
DNS propagation can take up to 24–48 hours globally, though most visitors will see the change within a few hours. During this time, the website may appear differently for different users depending on which DNS servers they query.
Tip: If you only want to point your domain to Momo Cloud without transferring it, updating nameservers at your current registrar is all you need to do. You do not have to transfer the domain to use Momo Cloud hosting.
Troubleshooting Domain Transfers
Transfer Rejected or Stuck
- Domain is still locked: Confirm you unlocked the domain at your current registrar. Some registrars take up to 24 hours to process the unlock.
- Wrong EPP/auth code: Double-check the code — it is case-sensitive. Request a fresh code from your current registrar if in doubt, as old codes can expire.
- WHOIS privacy still active: If the approval email never arrived, check that WHOIS privacy is fully disabled so the correct registrant email is exposed.
- Domain was recently registered or transferred: ICANN rules prohibit transferring a domain within 60 days of its original registration or a previous transfer. You must wait until the 60-day lock period has passed.
- Domain is expired: An expired domain cannot be transferred. Renew it at the current registrar first, then retry the transfer.
- Registrar-specific hold: Some registrars place additional transfer holds. Contact your current registrar's support to confirm there are no account-level or billing holds preventing the transfer.
Nameservers Not Updating
- Allow the full 24–48 hours for DNS propagation before concluding something is wrong.
- Clear your browser cache and try checking the domain from a different device or network.
- Use a public DNS checker tool to verify the nameservers are showing
ns1.momo.tzandns2.momo.tzglobally.
