How to Renew Your Domain and Enable Auto-Renew
Keeping your domain name renewed is one of the most important things you can do as a website owner — a lapsed domain takes your website, email, and any services tied to it completely offline, and if you wait too long, someone else can register it. This guide walks you through finding your domain expiry date, renewing manually, and turning on auto-renew so your domain is always protected.
Why Renewing on Time Matters
Your domain name is the address people use to find your website and send you email. When a domain expires, every service that depends on it stops working immediately:
- Your website goes offline — visitors see an error or a parking page.
- All email addresses at your domain stop receiving mail. Messages sent to you during this time are lost.
- Any subdomains, SSL certificates, and other services tied to the domain also stop working.
- After a grace period, a domain enters a costly redemption period, and eventually it is released back to the public where anyone can register it — including competitors.
The good news is that renewal is straightforward, and enabling auto-renew means you never have to think about it again.
Step 1 — Find Your Domain Expiry Date
- Log in to the Momo Cloud client area at
cloud.momo.tz. - Click Domains in the top navigation menu, then select My Domains.
- You will see a list of all domains registered under your account. The Next Due Date column shows when each domain expires.
- Domains expiring within 30 days are highlighted so you can act quickly.
Tip: Make a habit of checking your domain expiry dates every few months, especially if you manage multiple domains. You can also see upcoming renewals under Billing > Upcoming Renewals.
Step 2 — Renew Your Domain Manually
- In the My Domains list, click the domain name you want to renew.
- On the domain details page, click the Renew Domain button.
- Choose your preferred renewal period (1 year, 2 years, or longer depending on the domain extension). Renewing for multiple years at once is a great way to secure your domain and avoid annual renewal tasks.
- Click Add to Cart, then proceed to Checkout.
- Review your order summary and select your preferred payment method:
| Payment Method | Details |
|---|---|
| M-Pesa | Pay via Vodacom M-Pesa mobile money. You will receive a push prompt on your phone. |
| Tigo Pesa | Pay via Tigo mobile money. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete payment. |
| Airtel Money | Pay via Airtel mobile money wallet. |
| Visa / Mastercard | Pay with a debit or credit card. Card details are processed securely. |
- Complete payment. Once payment is confirmed, your domain expiry date will be updated automatically. You can verify this under My Domains.
Tip: If you pay via mobile money (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, or Airtel Money) and the payment goes through but your invoice still shows as unpaid after a few minutes, do not pay again — contact Momo Cloud support with your transaction reference number and we will apply the payment manually.
Step 3 — Enable Auto-Renew (Recommended)
Auto-renew automatically generates a renewal invoice before your domain expires and charges your account balance or saved payment method. This is the easiest way to make sure your domain never lapses.
- Go to Domains > My Domains and click the domain you want to protect.
- On the domain details page, look for the Auto-Renew toggle or setting.
- Switch it to Enabled and save your changes.
- Make sure your account has a valid payment method or sufficient wallet balance to cover the renewal when it is due. You can top up your wallet under Billing > Add Funds.
Tip: Auto-renew requires a valid payment method on file. If your mobile money number changes or a card expires, update your billing details immediately so that auto-renew can process without interruption.
Domain and Hosting Renewal Are Separate
This is a common source of confusion: your domain name and your hosting plan are two separate services with separate renewal dates. Renewing your hosting does not renew your domain, and renewing your domain does not renew your hosting. Always check both renewal dates in your client area to make sure everything stays active. You can view upcoming renewals for all services under Billing > Upcoming Renewals.
The Domain Lifecycle After Expiry
If a domain is not renewed by its expiry date, it passes through several stages. Understanding this timeline helps you act quickly if you ever miss a renewal deadline.
| Stage | Timeframe (Typical) | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Before expiry | Domain works normally. Renew at the standard price. |
| Grace Period | 0–30 days after expiry | Domain may stop resolving. You can still renew at the standard price during this window. |
| Redemption Period | 30–75 days after expiry | Domain is suspended. Recovery requires paying a high redemption fee in addition to the renewal cost. Contact support immediately if you reach this stage. |
| Pending Delete | ~75–80 days after expiry | Domain cannot be recovered. It is queued for deletion. |
| Released | ~80+ days after expiry | Domain is released to the public registry. Anyone can register it. |
Tip: Exact grace and redemption period lengths vary by domain extension (TLD). Contact Momo Cloud support as soon as possible if your domain has expired — the sooner you act, the lower the cost of recovery.
Keep Your Contact Email Address Valid
Momo Cloud sends renewal reminder notices to the email address on your account. If that address is outdated or full, you will miss these reminders. To update your contact email:
- Log in to the client area and click your name in the top-right corner.
- Select Edit Account Details.
- Update your Email Address and save.
Renewal reminders are sent at 30 days, 14 days, 7 days, and 3 days before expiry. If you are not receiving these emails, check your spam or junk folder and whitelist mail.momo.tz as a trusted sender.
Troubleshooting Common Renewal Issues
I did not receive any renewal reminder emails
Check your spam or junk folder first. If the emails are not there, log in to your client area and verify that your contact email address is correct and up to date. You can also set up auto-renew so that no manual action is needed. If the problem persists, contact Momo Cloud support.
I made a payment but my domain still shows as expired
Mobile money payments can occasionally take a few minutes to be confirmed. Wait up to 10 minutes and refresh your client area. If the domain is still showing as expired, do not make a second payment — instead, contact Momo Cloud support with your mobile money transaction ID or reference number and we will resolve it promptly.
My domain is in the redemption period
Do not panic — but act quickly. Contact Momo Cloud support immediately via live chat or email. We will check whether the domain is still recoverable and advise you on the redemption fee and process. Recovery fees are set by the domain registry and vary by extension, so the sooner you contact us, the better.
